France to begin stopping migrant vessels in Channel after UK pressure
French officials have consented to start stopping small boats in the Channel, following an extended period of insistence from the UK.
The change in policy follows the British leader wrote to the President asking him to back the initiative and saying there currently "lack any effective preventive measure" in the Channel.
French security forces will be allowed to stop the small boats at sea, but exclusively prior to they've picked up their passengers, according to authoritative confirmation.
French police have infrequently acted to stop the heavily loaded boats departing from the coastline because it is considered excessively high a danger to both officers and individuals.
"It is essential that we implement these methods this period... We have zero effective prevention in the Channel waters."
Now, a French naval police representative says officers will begin intervening at sea, with the objective of safeguarding human life.
Significantly, the spokesperson ruled out the use of entanglement devices to stop boats, which had earlier been suggested as a potential method to disable the engines of the boats.
The decision to intervene at all is a major advancement, following a brief change towards a more aggressive strategy this warmer season, which dropped off when the previous government official left government.
This was demonstrated in the summer month, in the run-up to a summit between the Prime Minister and President, when French police were witnessed wading into the sea to slash the sides of a vessel.
Now French officials will once more be permitted to intercept boats before they collect asylum-seeking individuals from the coastal areas of northern France, however it's not clear how the vessels will be prevented.
Powerful gusts are currently postponing the commencement of interceptions and the human trafficking gangs will be seeking ways to adapt to avoid interception, as they have done so often in the previous instances.
The Home Office and the Prime Minister's office have been contacted for response.
